"Works offline" means two completely different things.

There are two architectures behind the phrase, and they fail differently. A cloud tracker with an offline mode keeps your entries in a local queue and uploads them when a connection returns. A local-first tracker writes the record to the device as its normal behaviour and never needs an upload at all.

Both let you press start on a plane. The difference shows up elsewhere. With the queue model, the account is the record: lose access to it, let a subscription lapse, or hit a sync conflict between two devices, and the history is negotiable. With the local model, the phone is the record — which is safer in one direction and riskier in the other, because nothing restores it for you if the phone is lost and you never exported.

Neither is universally better. But when someone searches for an offline timesheet, they almost always mean the second thing and get sold the first.

Feature lists are long and mostly identical; these five answers are where the real differences sit.

  • Can you start a timer before signing in? If the first screen is a login, the account is not optional, whatever the store listing implies.
  • Where does history live when there is no connection? On the device permanently, or in a queue waiting to drain?
  • Can you edit a forgotten stop time? Every honest tracker needs repair. Apps that treat entries as immutable produce records people abandon.
  • Is there a CSV export you control? Export is what turns a private log into an invoice. Without it, your data is only as portable as the vendor allows.
  • Does it charge for the part you need? Team features behind a subscription are reasonable. A timer behind one is not.

Timesheet — a straightforward project-and-task tracker with local storage and export, closer in shape to a traditional timesheet than to a focus app. Where it loses: no Pomodoro or focus-session concept, so it covers billing but not the "help me start working" problem.

Cloud-first: the account is the record

Toggl Track — the reference point for freelance time tracking. Excellent reporting, a genuine offline mode that syncs later, integrations with dozens of tools, and a usable free tier. Where it wins over local apps: if you invoice through connected tools, work across a laptop and phone, or ever need a second person to see the data, nothing local competes. The trade: an account is mandatory, and your history is a hosted service.

Clockify — built for teams: approvals, shared projects, rates, and a generous free tier for multiple users. Where it wins: anything involving more than one person. The trade: the same as Toggl, plus an interface shaped around team administration you may not want as a solo worker.

Adjacent: focus tools that log time as a side effect

Forest — a focus app with a gamified anti-distraction loop. It records focus sessions, but it is not a timesheet and does not pretend to be. Included because people searching for "offline focus timer" land on it and then discover it cannot produce billable hours.

04 · THE DECISION

Pick by who reads the record, not by feature count.

The single question that resolves this choice: does anyone other than you ever need to see these hours?

  • Only you, and you invoice from a spreadsheet → a local-first app. Chrono if you also want Pomodoro cycles and a focus habit; aTimeLogger if you want deep activity reports; Timesheet if you think in projects and tasks.
  • You, plus a client who wants a report → still local-first, as long as it exports CSV. Send the export, not access.
  • A team, an approver, or shared budgets → Toggl Track or Clockify. The account stops being overhead and starts being the point.
  • You mainly need help starting → a Pomodoro-capable tracker beats a pure focus toy, because you get the habit and a record.
